The Truth About Laser Hair Removal
Let’s get real about laser hair removal, we’ve all heard of it, but many people don’t know what to expect, or whether it will work at all for them. Keep on reading to find out all you never knew you needed to know before diving into the world of laser hair removal.
How does it all work?
Unlike shaving, waxing or plucking, laser hair removal is a long-term solution to removing unwanted hair - go ahead, do that happy dance!
At Caci we use a Diode laser. With Diode, a beam of light is passed through the targeted area, where it's absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft and follicle. This generates heat, which loosens the hair and disables the cells involved in hair growth to prevent future hairs from forming.
Are their risks or side effects?
If you’re seeing a reputable laser specialist its rare and unlikely, but it can be possible to get a superficial burn or pigmentation. At Caci, our staff are trained at our academy, ensuring we’re delivering safe and effective treatments.
Is anyone suitable for treatment?
The laser works by targeting colour in the hair shaft and follicle – so the best results can be seen with darker hair. For that reason, blonde, red and grey hairs can be more difficult to remove.
Some underlying medical conditions and medications may exclude you from the treatment, as they make the results harder to predict. We recommend coming in for a consultation where our skin experts can assess your suitability.
How do I prepare before the treatment?
For your initial consultation (which is free by the way!), we will need to assess your hair type, so avoid shaving two days before, leaving around 2mm of hair growth so we can accurately assess your suitability.
Next there’s prep-hairing for the treatment itself – yes, we went there. Prior to treatment, you need to come in with the treatment area clean shaven. We’d recommend shaving the night before or the day of to ensure best results.
What can I expect during the treatment?
You and your treatment provider will wear special glasses to ensure complete safety. Your treatment provider will also wear a face mask to ensure there is nothing transferred through the air while undertaking the treatment.
You will then be asked to lay down and get comfortable before starting the treatment. During the treatment the level of discomfort varies between individuals and depends on the area being treated - but at Caci we pride ourselves on performing the treatments quickly and safely, so it's over in no time!
Did we mention that our Diode laser has a cooling tip? This helps to make the treatment more comfortable.
What should I do after my appointment?
There’s no downtime after your treatment, although your skin may be pink or even red in the treated area. This is absolutely normal. Redness may last from a few minutes up to 24 hours and it may feel a little like mild sunburn or windburn. If you feel this, you can apply a cold compress to the area, and remember to apply sunscreen to the area daily. We also recommend taking the day off from the gym, pool, spa for at least 24/48hours to avoid heat or excessive sweating. (No need to ask us twice!)
As far as visible results, laser hair removal requires a bit of commitment as one session won’t likely yield much of a difference. But you should start to see results after your second or third treatment.
When will I see results?
In some cases, we can remove up to 98% of hair, and the average person can expect at least up to an 80% removal. It's important to note that the way the human body has been designed means it's impossible to remove 100% of unwanted hair. However, this is dependent on age, hair type, hormone levels, any existing medical conditions and other factors.
So how many treatments do I need and how much will it cost?
For best results, we recommend 8 treatments, with each treatment performed around 5-6 weeks apart. The best option for long-term results is on our laser hair removal membership; Freedom.
The cost varies from person to person, depending on the treatment area. Weekly payments can start from as little as $19 per week on our laser hair removal plan Freedom.
For an accurate quote, we recommend popping in for that free consultation.
