It can help slow down the aging process

Studies have shown that the daily application of sunscreen can actually slow down the aging process. A Broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen protects the breakdown of collagen, by preserving the essential collagen within the skin, you will have younger, firmer looking skin for longer.

It can prevent pigmentation

In order to protect from the damaging effects of the sun, our skin increases the production of melanin (dark brown pigment). The extra melanin is what gives us a tan. Although, in some cases, the sun can cause an uneven increase in melanin production, which is what causes sun spots and pigmentation. Sun damage can also cause a permanent stretching of small blood vessels, giving your skin a mottled, reddish appearance.

It protects you from skin cancer

Not only does sunscreen reduce the effects of aging, but it also plays an important role in preventing cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in NZ, and it’s largely preventable. Over 90% of all skin cancer cases in NZ are attributed to excess sun exposure.

But there are other complications from overexposure to the sun as well. These include eye problems, a weakened immune system, age spots, wrinkles and leathery skin. Don’t underestimate the value of putting on your sunscreen!

You need UVA and UVB protection

The higher the SPF the better, right? Not really. This is a misconception, in fact, SPF actually only measures the protection against UVB (burning) rays. For the ultimate in sun protection, your sunscreen should be a broad spectrum and also protect against UVA (ageing) rays, which have been linked to skin cancers as well as wrinkles and other signs of sun damage.

Follow these application tips for the best sun protection and anti-ageing benefits:

  • Apply sunblock liberally to all areas of the body
  • Apply sunblock at least a half hour before going into the sun.
  • Sunblock should be the last product applied to the body and the face
  • Always reapply every 2 hours when out in the sun and after swimming, sweating
  • Apply sunscreen every day. No matter what your plans are.
  • Find a sunscreen that not only offers broad-spectrum SPF protection, but also has a blend of antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and hydrators for optimal anti-aging benefits
