As former clinic owner of Caci Taupo and Caci New Plymouth and now, the new Franchise Development Manager for Caci, Penny Chapman has a unique insight into what it's like being part of an award-winning New Zealand franchise. We sat down with her to talk all things Caci, franchising, and what it takes to be a successful clinic owner.
You've had plenty of experience with Caci, from being a franchisee to joining support office. What's been your favourite part of the journey so far?
Hands down, the best part of my journey with Caci and FAB Group has been the learnings I have garnered from being a franchisee, multi-unit owner and leader.
Truly, it’s hard to resist sharing every little thing I would class as an ‘achievement’ but really what stands out for me is that through all the processes in owning a Caci clinic (from buying to selling and EVERYTHING in between) it’s the exposure to all aspects of business and franchising that I would have never had the opportunity to have delved into.
What are some key skills it pays to have or develop as a clinic owner?
You have to have the energy and desire to run your business and lead your team, and a true belief that the franchise you own, the treatments you offer and the team you have, are really are the best!
I also believe it really pays to know what your long term goals are in business. To earn so much? Deliver so much profit? Become a multi-unit owner? Sell in x number of years?
The big picture is “why” we’ll do it, but you have to make sure you are disciplined enough to get up and do the day-to-day very well, and inspire your team to do the same.
How does FAB Group support Caci clinic franchise owners to achieve success?
FAB Group provides a very strong framework around its operational systems, training facility, marketing & IT support, while also providing a high level of field (sales) support to the clinics.
Like most franchises, at the start of the franchisee’s journey there is more support available and of course, every franchisee’s requirements are different. And over time as the franchisee develops within their clinic, they find the level of support needed is less. FAB Group very much sees the relationship between franchisor and franchisee as a ‘business partnership’. And like all good partnerships, that requires good communication, support and structure.
What are the benefits of being part of a franchise like Caci?
At the heart of what Caci does and believes in are its people. Whether that is the clinic owner and their teams, the treatment providers and their clients, or support office and the clinics.

What's your advice for anyone interested in owning their own Caci clinic?
For me, owning a Caci clinic has been hugely rewarding. I am proud of the successful businesses I have built under the Caci brand. I have worked alongside great teams and have had the privilege of being part of many clients' journeys.
From the initial stages of enquiring about the Caci Franchise, through the due diligence phase, to becoming a franchisee - you are left with no doubt that you are certain of your choice in becoming a clinic owner.
Having the right people to advise you throughout your journey is crucial too. Whether that be family or friends, accountants or solicitors, the support network around you will determine the levels of success you will reach.
For me, my journey with Caci has not finished. This year marks 25 years since Caci was started by David and Jackie Smith.
Caci is still as exciting today as it was in the early days of innovation and growth and I am thrilled to be part of the team that takes Caci past this milestone.
