It's no secret that skin is a delicate thing, and any number of changes (no matter how big or small) in your environment or routine can disrupt the balance.

Often, skin might react by becoming sensitised, red and irritated – which can be uncomfortable and frustrating to deal with.

But before you declare a skin emergency, there are a few things you can do to help calm and soothe stressed-out skin.

Whether it's redness, dryness, itchiness or other signs of irritation, here's what to do when your skin is having a reaction.

Do: Go back to basics

When your skin is in a reactive state, the best thing you can do is strip your skincare routine right back to the essentials.

Stick to the fail-safe products you know and trust, and take a break from anything with active ingredients that have the potential to further irritate – such as exfoliating acids, Vitamin C, retinol or fragrance.

For an instant burst of relief, we recommend our Skin Healing Gel – formulated with soothing manuka honey and Vitamins A and E to help lock in moisture – or our Soothing Mask, which is enriched with jojoba and almond oil for non-irritating hydration.

Don't: Go overboard with cleansing

While it's still important to make sure your face is cleansed properly, avoid the temptation to use overly harsh cleansers and piping hot water as this can strip your skin of its natural oils and worsen the issue.

Look for soothing cream or gel cleansers and try to avoid products that foam up, as these can be more drying for your skin in the long run.

Do: Get expert advice
