Skin 101: Summer Skin

It's fair to say we have a love / hate affair with the sun. While we long for days spent at the beach and balmy afternoon BBQs—we hate the irritation and dryness our skin sees during summer. Not to mention the potential harm of sun damage and the worst of all, sun burn!

Luckily, there are treatments, products and rituals you can incorporate to enjoy the sun—but not let it spoil your summer. 1. How does summer affect my skin?
While vitamin D and fresh air benefit our skin during the hotter months, we're also more prone to rashes, irritation, and dryness. You have the heat, beach swims and salty water to thank, which dries out the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin). Blemishes, oiliness and bacterial infections can also become an issue thanks to slathering yourself in sunscreen (but good on you!) or an influx of sweat on the skin. Not to mention the potential harm of sun damage and it's side effects: sun burn, pigmentation and redness. Luckily, there are treatments, products and rituals you can incorporate to enjoy the sun—but not let it spoil your summer.

2. What can we do to support our skin in summer?
Sunscreen
Surprise, surprise! SPF should be part of your daily routine regardless of the season or whether you're inside or not. UVA rays can penetrate glass which means you're not safe inside your home, office or car. SPF use also protects skin from visible blue lights (from laptops, cell phones tablets and halogen lights), infrared (from heat sources like ceramic cooktops, fires). If you’re an oily or acne-prone skin type, opt for a non-greasy, sheer SPF option—so there really is no excuse to protect your beautiful skin!

Hydration
In New Zealand, summers are hot and can both be humid and dry, meaning the baking air can suck moisture right out of your skin! Keeping it hydrated is essential, both by moisturising and drinking that H2o. If you don't, it very well may react by compensating. Instead, it can overproduce oil in an attempt to hydrate the skin, which can often leads to breakouts and congestion.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant combatting the effects of pollution, smoke, sun exposure—making it a winner, especially in summer. Vitamin C also promotes collagen and elastin synthesis and specifically inhibits melanin to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. It is the second line of defence against harmful UVA rays (second to your SPF, obviously) while also helping to boost skin’s antioxidant defences.

Photo Rejuvenation

  • Apply SPF every two hours, or after every swim
