Skin 101: Summer Skin
It's fair to say we have a love / hate affair with the sun. While we long for days spent at the beach and balmy afternoon BBQs—we hate the irritation and dryness our skin sees during summer. Not to mention the potential harm of sun damage and the worst of all, sun burn!
Luckily, there are treatments, products and rituals you can incorporate to enjoy the sun—but not let it spoil your summer. Read on to get the 101 on protecting that beautiful skin during the hotter months. Plus the treatments we have on offer to hydrate the skin (Sonophoresis and Hydradermabrasion) but also to repair sun damaged skin post summer too (Photo Rejuvenation and Fractional Co2 Laser).
1. How does summer affect my skin?
While vitamin D and fresh air benefit our skin during the hotter months, we're also more prone to rashes, irritation, and dryness. You have the heat, beach swims and salty water to thank, which dries out the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin). Blemishes, oiliness and bacterial infections can also become an issue thanks to slathering yourself in sunscreen (but good on you!) or an influx of sweat on the skin. Not to mention the potential harm of sun damage and it's side effects: sun burn, pigmentation and redness. Luckily, there are treatments, products and rituals you can incorporate to enjoy the sun—but not let it spoil your summer.
2. What can we do to support our skin in summer?
Surprise, surprise! SPF should be part of your daily routine regardless of the season or whether you're inside or not. UVA rays can penetrate glass which means you're not safe inside your home, office or car. SPF use also protects skin from visible blue lights (from laptops, cell phones tablets and halogen lights), infrared (from heat sources like ceramic cooktops, fires). If you’re an oily or acne-prone skin type, opt for a non-greasy, sheer SPF option—so there really is no excuse to protect your beautiful skin!
In New Zealand, summers are hot and can both be humid and dry, meaning the baking air can suck moisture right out of your skin! Keeping it hydrated is essential, both by moisturising and drinking that H2o. If you don't, it very well may react by compensating. Instead, it can overproduce oil in an attempt to hydrate the skin, which can often leads to breakouts and congestion.
Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant combatting the effects of pollution, smoke, sun exposure—making it a winner, especially in summer. Vitamin C also promotes collagen and elastin synthesis and specifically inhibits melanin to reduce the appearance of uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. It is the second line of defence against harmful UVA rays (second to your SPF, obviously) while also helping to boost skin’s antioxidant defences.
It's always best to book a free consultation at your local Caci to get a unique recommendation for your skin by one of our experts. They'll be able to advise on what's best for you, your skin concerns and your skin goals.
3. Opps, I've already felt the wrath of the sun. What treatments can help combat the negative effects of summer on my skin?
To fight the dryness that can come with the hotter months, opt for a boost hydration at a deeper level, like a Sonophoresis Skincare Infusion or new Hydradermabrasion.
Our Sonophoresis skin conditioning treatment uses sound wave technology and micro currents to push an infusion of skin-boosting ingredients deeper into the dermis, where it can more effectively hydrate, reduce redness, and encourage collagen production and cell turnover.
While our Hydradermabrasion skin conditioning treatment deeply cleanses and detoxes for instant hydration! This treatment uses our Skinsmiths Detox Serum, infused with Green Tea Extract, Aloe and Chamomile plus Hyaluronic acid. Both give ultimate hydration—so you can carry on and enjoy your summer with that Caci glow.
To support your skin in recovering from sun damage such as pigmentation and dark sports, our advanced treatments, Photo Rejuvenation and Fractional Co2 Laser are great options for post summer skin SOS!
Photo Rejuvenation uses a Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) system which safely pulses high energy light beams through the skin surface, targeting skin pigmentation in underlying tissue and minor surface blood vessels whilst improving skin texture and overall complexion and encouraging the production of collagen.
Fractional Co2 Laser
Our Fractional CO2 Laser treatment uses a laser that passes pulses of light down through to the deeper layers of the skin, causing controlled damage to the cells below and triggering the skin's natural healing process. This process allows the cells in the basal (deeper) layer to be trained to grow back stronger, firmer, and faster, so skin becomes smoother, tighter, and more even in tone.
