Skin 101: Collagen

Collagen

For us here at Caci, we've been talking about collagen for a loooong time. Why? Well, because it's a fundamental part in what makes our skin—our skin. If we weren't talking about it, it'd be kind of weird, right?⠀

So, what actually is collagen? How is it made and is it true that you start loosing your natural source from day you hit 25? 😱 Should you be supplementing with products and treatments? 💊 And do they even work?!⠀
You've got the questions—we have the answers.

What is collagen?
Collagen is one of the fundamental building blocks of skin, muscles, ligaments and bones—think of it as the glue that holds everything together. It's so fundamental, it makes up one third of your body's protein composition! When it comes to the skin on your face, collagen is what keeps our skin from sagging so we can maintain a plump, healthy look.

How is it made?
Collagen is produced by connective tissue cells called fibroblasts. The exciting thing about collagen is that by stimulating its growth, it causes a domino effect i.e. the more collagen you have, the more your body is able to produce and maintain.

Is it true you start loosing collagen from mid-twenties?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but yes. It's true. As a result of pollution, stress, environmental factors and other toxins—the body’s capacity to produce collagen starts to deplete in your mid to late twenties. From then on, people generally loose about 1% of collagen per year. But it's not a lost cause!

What can I do to maintain and induce collagen?
Opt for treatments and products that support the induction of collagen. Microneedling is a popular in-clinic treatment that is proven to support the formulation of collagen. It works by triggering the body’s wound healing response resulting in collagen production which is stronger, and firmer than before.

What can I do to maintain and induce collagen?
There is also scientific research that proves retinol promotes collagen formation within the dermis of the skin. And collagen supplements? The jury is still out!
