The Beginner’s Guide to Retinol Skincare
In article Skin 101: Retinol, we covered exactly what retinol is, and what makes it an absolute powerhouse ingredient in skincare when it comes to promoting skin renewal. Hello graceful aging!
But where do you start as a beginner in the world of retinol? Well, who better to give you the best advice on approaching retinol than National Caci Skincare Trainer Linda Sharrem. Read on as we talk to Linda about retinol, for newbies!
Where do I start if I’ve never used retinol and where does it go in my skincare routine?
Start with a low dose retinol, once or twice a week in the PM, and then increase usage weekly. Retinol is always used at night-time because of its photo sensitivity.
I recommend starting with Murad’s Retinol Youth Renewal Night Cream to introduce retinol to your skincare, as moisturisers have a lower dose than serums. Then add Murad’s Retinol Youth Renewal Serum into the regime.
It is very important to have your skin healthy before starting retinol—well hydrated with a good skin barrier. A cleanser and moisturiser must be a part of your skin regime first! (That’s what creates that healthy barrier!)
Is it safe to start using retinol when I have sensitive skin?
Yes, but your skin needs to be well prepped leaving you with good hydration and low inflammation. This means that your cleansing and moisturising regime needs to be in place first.
Again, start with a low dose retinol in a moisturiser. A great option would be to add a few drops of Skinsmiths Retinol Booster in to your moisturiser a couple times a week and then increase daily.
What is the best age to start using retinol?
The earlier you start using retinol the better it is for your skin as it’s is both preventative and corrective.
If you’re not yet seeing any signs of aging on your skin, retinol will keep your skin strong which will slow down the visible aging process. And if you are already seeing signs of aging, corrective retinol well help repair and reverse the already present damage. Retinol is great for acne-prone skin as well!
When can I expect to see results from using retinol?
With a good stable retinol product, you could expect to see results within a couple of weeks. However, it does not stop there. The longer you use retinol, the better the results are, and it keeps improving!
How do I know when it’s time to use retinol more often?
When you start with a low dose retinol, it’s important to know your skin can initially get a bit dry, sometimes flaky, and you may notice a few breakouts. But soon your skin will look smooth, even, and glowing. From there, you can start increasing the amount of retinol you use for more dramatic results.
Despite what you may think, skin can take a high dose of retinol, so we can be constantly increasing the amount we use over time as our skin gets more accustomed.
